Farewell to Cape Town and to Africa....

So we're all packed up and ready for the third part of our world tour. Part one was Europe, Part two Africa, now comes Part three.... India :).

I'm so excited it's crazy.

Africa was a fun place to be, and Joan was a great host and was so kind to have us for most of the two months we were in South Africa.

South Africa itself is a bit of a mixed story. It's an amazingly beautiful place, but even though apartheid is over it will still take probably another 3 generations before things are a bit more equal. In a country where 1 in 4 or 1 in 6 (some huge number???) have HIV and AIDS it's horrifying that they advertise accepting people that carry the disease, but no talk of prevention??? The health minister a few years ago made it even worse by anouncing that if you drink beet juice it will cure, or prevent HIV???? Another horrible public figure (soon to be president or prime minister) raped a woman and it was found out she was HIV positive.... He made a public statement that he wasn't worried about getting HIV because he showers after having sex????? Never mind this poor woman being raped.... no one seemes to care? What a screwed up place. And in other ways so friendly with helpful people?? Joan's family has been great, and we also met some really friendly people along the way. It's the good ones that make the changes eventually.

Joan and her entire family (Jones) have been so amazing to us. They took us in, fed us and made us feel welcome. I'm hoping people like the Joneses will continue to make South Africa a nicer place where people don't have to be as afraid of  crime. I hope this doesn't offend anyone, I just want to share some of the things I've seen. I do think South Africa will get there, but it does take time.

There are some things about South Africa I will definitely miss. Joan's amazing dinners.... man she can make a yummy curry :). A resturant called the Ocean Basket that is cheap, but has yummy feesh.... they also have silly ads and puns about their freesh feesh that you can sea. Ok that wasn't funny, but they don't pay me to think of the slogans :). I'll miss my orange popsicles every day, and being able to have a quiet stroll around. I'll miss the sight of Table Mountain and of the Ocean so close. I'll miss Joan and I regret that I didn't play her cool card game again..... (I've written up the rules and will put it down below, as well as in the Stuff category on the main page here.) Also the penguins and seals. Plus I will definitly miss having our own room that I can hide in occationally.

Hopefully I'll make it back here and be able to see all the differences time makes. I know it will still be gorgeous when I return.

Thanks Joan for all your help, hopefully we didn't drive you too crazy. Hopefully we'll meet up again somewhere in the world and have a nice drink about 5PM :).

So long beautiful South Africa........ hello the rest of the world.......

Sheryl
